Helping Harry
Our problem solving challenge today was to help Harry! Harry is a small little puff ball that wants to sit up high and watch the class. The kids had pipe cleaners, tinfoil, index cards, tape, and a bag to work with to build Harry a perch. Check out their designs!
Why Do You Choose a Book?
The kiddos spent time picking out books for their book boxes today. We discussed why we pick certain books and that it is okay to put a book back if you aren't interested in it.
Ask your child what books they chose for their boxes.
We took our boxes to our SLC common area and got comfy with our books!

Town Hall Meeting
Lessons from Principal Nowak! Ask your child what book she read and about her powerful message.
Hands on Math
We used blocks to separate into groups when determining if a number was even or odd. It was cute to hear the "aha moments" when some of the kiddos realized, "it's just every other number!!".

Organizing the Library
The class went through our book baskets to make sure all books were put away gently in the correct basket. They sure were excited to have time to sit and explore all those books!
Who Guards Our Books??
After reading Library Dragon the class got in small groups to discuss how to take care of our classroom library. They listed ideas they had for keeping our books in good condition. We had so many ideas such as not throwing our books to no babies allowed near the books!! We picked out the four we thought were the most important to remember and made a sign. Presley and Marley spent a few days on the artwork and it turned out fabulous!

Math Journals
The kids love the flexible seating around the room. Thy sit at tables, on crates, and on the floor to work.
Today Kaia shared with us how she organized her data in her math journal.
Making it Better
Today we made another class graph but....we learned from our experiences yesterday! The kids realized they needed to organize their information even better by adding lines to the graph to keep it even.

Math Journals
Each day we will start off math with a journal question. The students will work together to answer the problem while I walk around and take note of strengths and areas of growth. Then a few students will teach the class how to solve the problem. This allows the students to view each other as teachers, but also to allow them to see there is more than one way to do math!!
Organizing Data
We have the spent the past several days organizing and analyzing data....kid friendly data! How many boys vs girls, how we get home from school, and school supplies!
The kiddos are loving the ownership of creating their own graphs and changing it as they realize they need to reorganize.

Can You Save Fred?
This cute problem solving activity really requires patience.... And no cheating! The children are given a gummy worm (Fred), a gummy life saver (a life preserve), a cup (the boat), and 4 paperclips.
Fred is floating on top of his boat with his life preserve trapped underneath. The challenge is to get the life preserve around Fred using only the paperclips. If Fred falls more than once, he drowns!
The kids had a lot of fun working to save Fred!
